Rare female internships offered at music recording studios – here’s how to apply

Kirklees women aiming for the music industry have an exciting new opportunity to take their first steps towards their chosen career.

Yorkshire Sound Women Network (YSWN) is launching two internship opportunities for young women living in Kirklees who want to gain real-life experience working in a recording studio.

The organization, a non-profit community interest company based in Huddersfield, has partnered with BASSment Studios in Huddersfield and Greenmount Studios in Leeds to offer two paid internships that will give trainees a valuable first step into the world of music production.

The internships were created as part of YSWN’s mission to provide better opportunities for women in the music industry, by addressing a gender gap which means that currently less than 5% of engineers studio sound “behind the glass” and only 10% of music technology students. students nationwide are women.

The organization’s own research revealed a similar situation in Yorkshire, with around seven in ten recording studios surveyed in the region being all-male environments.

Each successful candidate will gain hands-on experience assisting with the day-to-day operations of a busy recording studio, following sound engineers as they record and mix bands, assisting with studio maintenance and learning production from staff members.

Chosen interns will have a genuine love and enthusiasm for music and the way it is made, and although previous experience with a digital audio workstation (DAW) is welcome, it is not essential.

Instead, applicants must demonstrate that they have a positive attitude and are willing to learn all they can about how studios work.

To make opportunities accessible to as many eligible women as possible, each internship lasts a total of 16 days, worked flexibly between September and December this year and comes with a £2,000 scholarship (including travel costs) .

The opportunity is supported by Kirklees Council through the Leeds City Area Business Rate Pool.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience working in a music studio – an area where we know job opportunities for women can be too scarce,” says Heidi Johnson, Head of Development of YSWN.

“YSWN is thrilled to be able to partner with BASSment Studios and Greenmount Studios to begin closing the gender gap through these paid internship opportunities.”
